Prelim Video Task

Evaluation

1) Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
Throughout our preliminary task I worked with Leah and Antonio. We all took it in turns to carry out each job however each of us had more of a part in one aspect than another; for example, during filming Antonio and I both acted to be in the music video and Leah did the majority of the filming. However, there are shots in the video that has now actors, in this Antonio filmed the footage on his phone but Leah and I were both present to help Antonio get the shot right. As well as this me and Antonio have both edited the footage for the music video and we have all participated in a piece of paper work each.

2) How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?
Before we started filming we had to think of a way we would carry out all tasks required. Leah and Antonio (once the video was decided on) created a visual storyboard of the shots required and the timings/locations of each shot, this helped during the filming stages to get the shots precise, along side we also played the video. In addition to this we created a shooting schedule to form what days we would film and what shots would be filmed at what time, this was also with a prop list and locations.

3) What theories could you apply to the video you chose?
A theory that we could apply to our video 212 could partly be Verallis with the camera movements and shots as she believes that establishing shots as well as close up shots/mid shots are important within a music video. Throughout 212 there is a major use of mid and close up shots which shows the lyrics being pronounced to the audience. In addition to this another type of theory that could be used is Goodwin and his factor of voyeurism. Many of the shots used are close ups of her mouth which enhances a 'male gaze'.

4) What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?
We used minimalistic technology when it came to completing our preliminary task. We used the computers to research music videos in depth although after this we filmed on an iPhone as we thought the quality was better than out school cameras and to edit the footage we used Adobe Premiere Pro. As well as this, in premiere we used a range of tools to edit such as razor and cut which enables to video to be cut up. In addition we also put a black and white filter over the top of the whole video to make it look the same as the 212 video. An effect that we added over the top of the traffic light shot was compound blur as in the real video it goes a slight bit out of focus at the end of the shot.

5) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
Whilst planning, we had to work around what times everyone's lessons were within our group and whether we could film within our free periods, although we worked around this and filmed when we was all together and did paper work independently. In addition, whilst shooting we had to be aware of who was around us whilst we was doing the lip sync; this is because we played the video out loud and sung out loud as we lip synced, this was a concern as it does have inappropriate language and we filmed in a school with a low age range. Finally, whilst editing we had to make sure we all had input to ensure that we all liked the way it looked.

6) How successful was your music video copy? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently? What did others say about your production?
Our music video copy of 212 by Azaelia Banks was successful in the end, however we could have chosen a more challenging video according to camera techniques. We all worked well as a group and communicated efficiently which helped with out progress although, to improve our final outcome I would have tried to perfect the lip syncing more as well as the dancing within the video. In addition to this, others have said that ours does look good as there are minimal mistakes within the video and the two videos compared do look similar, which was the main aim of the task.

7) What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your music video, do you think?

As a result of completing this task I personally would do further research into different types of music and different types of videos in order to challenge my ability, however this has given me an excellent foundation within music videos and what some of them are trying to portray. In addition, I believe this prelim task has made me realise for the real music video your imagination needs to be used and applied to the work.

8) How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?

I feel as though filming a film opening and a music video is completely different as the film opening needs to be applied from nothing and doesn't have any base to start, where as with a music video, once the song is chosen using your imagination and the lyrics, this allows a range of ideas to flow to create a music video.

9) What are your strengths and weaknesses as a group member?

My strengths as a group member is being determined to complete the product as efficiently as possible and to reach the target as required. In addition to this I believe I am quite good with editing and working filming technology therefore this helps during the project. One of my weaknesses would be that I don't like being held back by other team members if they wasn't to do some of their work.

10) Looking at the other group's videos which do you think were most successful and why?

My favourite video out of all the prelim tasks that I believe to be one of the most successful is the one shown below which is call me maybe. I believe this one to be really successful as they manage to get each shot almost exact as the original and they ensure that effects placed over the top of the footage looks similar to the one they are trying to copy. As well as this they try to incorporate costumes that are like the original which makes the videos look even more similar.

Filming Reflection: How did it go? What went well? How could it have been better?

Our filming went really well and was a very efficient period. We got each shot how we desired and we have all the footage that we needed. We found another person other than our group who we incorporated within our filming. One thing that could have made the video better is if we had the exact same props (costumes) and we found a more similar location for the shots of the cars and the traffic lights.
