Interview Research

Above shows a presentation that gives an idea of what we would like to give away to our fans as a band. This needed to be planned and researched too ensure that we didn't give away too much, and we gave away enough to keep our audience intrigued.

Song List Research

We have analysed 3 different albums and their song lists, of which we have received ideas from the type of titles of songs on these particular albums. Two of these belong to women individual artists, and another to a group of singers, however all are recognisable in the type of songs as they correspond to the type of album it is.

 Ariana's "My Everything" album is instantly noticeable that a lot of her songs were inspired by a time in her life where she had relationship troubles or a trouble within her life. Typically you would think it to be about a break up that she experienced and she is reminiscing on events that mean a lot to her. Her album name is also the title of a song which she spoke out about to be dedicated to her Grandad who unfortunately passed away.

 Dolly Parton's album "Better Day" first of all has an uplifting image with the colours and text used, however the title of the songs relate the genre of country; which is inspiring for Vanilla, and it is clear these songs are in someway documenting her journey and events within the industry as well as past times she experienced with others that she considers as important. These titles particularly inspired as; being within the country genre but also being influenced by country as well as other times within her life of events, which is the approach we wish to take.




Little mixes album is slightly different as these songs will be a representation of all of the group of girls as individuals and the journeys they have experienced together; another aspect we wish to incorporate into our track list.
OUR SONG LIST:
Our songs represent us as a group and individuals, and express the journeys and events of which we have experienced together. We definitely wanted to use a country theme across all of our products, especially the titles of our songs. A lot of songs are empowering and express us as bold unique girls.

Student Music Videos

LEVEL 4
Positives
- Editing is fluent and all cuts are in time with the beat which makes all of the video flow together. 
-They have a variety of locations that all link with the theme and image that they are trying to represent. 
- The use of the powder paint works well as it links with the persona that are trying to be portrayed by the artists.
- Use of variety of shots, such as on the stairs, in buildings in between rocks. 
Negatives
- It is slightly repetitive with the flashes incorporated within the editing as this happens quite a lot.


LEVEL 4
Positives
- This has a variety of shots within to make the whole music video different.
- They have edited well with the effects over the top to make the video look more rustic and make all the clips link with each other. There are also other techniques such as the fade and 
- Range of camera shots such as pan, stationary and track. 
- Good use of lighting to fit in with the theme of the video.
- Different use of ideas such as the fridge with cameras. 
Negatives
- It gets a bit boring throughout as nothing new is really introduced such as a range of different editing/locations. 
- Sometimes gets fast then slow and is a bit confusing.


LEVEL 3
Positives
- Good relationship shown between the boy and girl actor. The audience can make believe that they match together. 
- The use of the props and where the actors are does link with the song such as when they are in the car and the lyrics say "in the back seat of your rover". 
Negatives
- Minimal locations are used therefore there isn't much variety to the video. 
- There isn't a lot of editing used within it, such as there are just straight cuts and not many transitions to make the video flow. 
- It gets a bit boring as the only bit of lip syncing is in the same location all the time. 
- Nothing new is introduced which doesn't give the audience anything to cling onto. 


LEVEL 2/3
Positives
- I like the idea that they follow the boy around and you are following him on his story during the music video which makes him engage in the video. 
- Variety of camera shots.
Negatives
- There isn't any lip syncing in the video therefore just following the boy gets a bit tedious. 
- Some of the props like the teddy bear seem a bit irrelevant and don't make sense in correlation with the lyrics in the video. 
- Lots of different lighting which doesn't make all the shots flow together and makes the video look a bit broken. 


LEVEL 4
Positives
- A good range of editing incorporated such as the fades and transitions and makes it look like a shadow over the top of one shot to another. 
- Good use of props such as the money as the title does have dollar signs within therefore they are making pure links through the mise en scene. 
- They all work well together as a group and make the audience believe that they have a good relationship between each other. 
- Reverse shot works well within the editing and all shots. 
Negatives
- Gets a bit repetitive towards the end with the overlay of colours. 
- The sprinkler clip is used a lot of times and doesn't introduce anything new to the audience.
- Some of the shots do not have good lighting.

Audience

How do you consume music?
When? Do you have a daily music routine? Is some music more suitable at a certain time of day than another?
Music is apart of my daily routine especially whilst I am in school. Music helps whilst I am revising and studying for exams, as well as doing homework, it acts as a relaxing mechanism. Whilst I am studying I like to listen to a calming playlist that has minimal words which helps me concentrate. In addition I like to listen to music whilst I am getting ready or just going around daily tasks which either accompanies my mood or is used to help lift my mood. 
I believe a faster type of music is better to be listened to before an event to help get you enjoyable and excited.

Where at Gigs, Car, School?
The main place that I wish to listen to music is mainly in my bedroom whilst I am revising/studying as well as getting ready in the morning or before going out. As well as this, I enjoy listening to music in the car whilst I am driving as this fills time whilst travelling somewhere and is comforting whilst I am alone. Driving with music also allows me to discover news songs if I was to put the radio on which I do from time to time, however I normally plug my phone in through the media player and play songs off one of my playlists.
I have also been to festivals and concerts revolving purely around music which I believe to be an amazing experience if you enjoy music, as this way you can enjoy all types of music with friends/family. For example, going to a festival for a weekend allows you to go to acts that you may have heard one or two of theirs songs in the charts however they may sing different songs, this way you can discover new music.

Who with? do you share your music or is it an individual experience?

Sometimes it varies as to who I share my music with as most of the time I do listen to my music individually, however when I listen to my music in the car it is usually shared with another person. My music isn't really an acquired taste as it is mainly music in the charts, which is normally shown on the radio. In addition to this, when I do listen to music on my own it will usually be whilst I am doing some work to help me concentrate or if I am in the car on my own. 


How? radio, computer, ipod, tv, live, dancing, homework, getting ready ie doing other things - background wallpaper.
The main type of device that I would listen to my music from is through a phone/ipad/laptop and usually connect this to a speaker of some sort. Sometimes I will connect my phone to my speaker in my bedroom, in addition to this I normally connect my phone within the car as well through a lead. 

Why? What are the pleasures associated with music consumption? What does it offer the audience and what needs does it gratify?
Normal pleasures that acquire listening to music is either joy or sadness. Sometimes I listen to music to block out anything if I am upset or in a down mood, however if I am really happy I also enjoy listening to music to accompany my mood.

Star Profile

Richard Dyer

Within todays lesson we analysed the theorist Richard Dyer and what theories he had. We all came up with a variety of different types of media platforms which are Film, TV, Music, Newspaper, YouTube/Online and Magazines.
There are a range of famous figures related with these types of media platforms.

MUSIC- Ariana Grande
NEWSPAPER- Rupert Murdoch
YOUTUBE- Zoella


Music: Stars (1979) was Dyers first book. This suggested that he developed the idea that the viewers' perception of a film is heavily influenced by the perception of its stars and publicity material and reviews determine the way audiences experience the film.
He suggested that there is a difference between the phrases pop "performer" and "star". Dyer says that "pop performer" is anyone who delivers a song and sings/performs it to an audience where as a "pop star" is a well known artist who is especially known within the industry, just for being them or due to something significant labelling them as that specific artist.
Richard Dyer states that to be a "pop star" they need to have staying power to remain in the industry long enough to be remembered as well as this they need to have a different character and personality to others within the industry to be recognised as an independent artist.

No Rest- Dry The River

Within our lesson today we all gathered as a group to analyse the music video of "No Rest". From this task we had to picture what type of music video we would make from the lyrics we heard. My ideas were:
Setting 1: In a beach
Setting 2: Bedroom
- The use of pictures when the lyric "picture frames* is sung showing the audience memories of a couple.
- Flash back memories of past events with the partner.

What Music Means To Me...

Carol Verallis

Carol Verallis' theory is based on music editing. Based around 4 key concepts which are Narrative, Editing, Camera Movement/Framing, Diegesis.
Narrative

• Video is the visual response to the narrative, whatever is happening visually reflects the lyrics in the song
• Narrative may not always be completed, dysfunctional/fragmented.

Editing

• The video may disrupt or break the conventions of continuity editing. Editing may also be brought to the foreground. May see Jump cuts, Breaks of the 360 degree rule, cutting with the beat, juxtaposed frames and graphic matches.

Camera

• Establishing shots are one of the key features. Medium and close up shots also establish the artist.
• The style of framing is also distinctive.

Diegesis

• Setting of the video.
• Sounds within the setting (cut to diegetic sound)(birds, cars, people).

As shown above, the music video 'Pound the Alarm' has approximately 366 camera cuts and shots. This music video has a lot of flickering ghosting effects which enhances the amount of cuts. They use this in order to tease the audience of what the artist is going to show, such as performance and location.

Goodwin Task

Andrew Godwin came up with six different conventions that are shown in music videos to differentiate them from each other.
1) A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals which illustrate, amplify or contradict the lyrics.
Illustrate- How it is shown and how props are used.
Amplify-  How actions are used to connect the audience.
Contradict- Contrapuntal/Opposite/Contrast.
An example video that illustrates a relationship between the visuals and language is riptide. They use props in conjunction with the lyrics to enhance the relationship between the visuals and lyrics to the audience.

An example video that amplifies a relationship between the visuals and language is Kanye Wests homecoming. This is shown throughout the visuals portraying to the audience that the location shown is where Kanye grew up and has sentimental feeling as presented throughout the lyrics.

2)Thought Beats: Seeing the sounds (the relationship between the music and the visuals which illustrate, amplify and contradict).

3)Genre-related style and iconography present.
- the use of a 'trademark' (an example of what they wear/what they are known for)
-Genre also shown by the location presented in the music video
-What genre is portrayed by the video.

4)Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist: the creation of a star image to promote a recognizable brand image.
-Close-ups to promote the sales of the single.
-Most common with women as they use provocative angles.

5)Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
voyeur- someone who looks at someone in a certain way.
-Voyeuristic angles of women in order to entice a male audience.

6)Intertextual references to other media texts may be present, especially humorous videos.
-Taking ideas from others, for example films/video games/music. This could be used in order to create recognition for what the music video is portraying.

Music Videos

There are a variety of different music videos that have aspects that make them particular from others. For example Narrative, Concept and Performance. 

Last Friday Night music video by Katy Perry is an example of a narrative music video. A narrative music video consists of telling a story that is told throughout the lyrics supported by the actions portrayed throughout the video. This type requires the viewers to understand the lyrics to be aware of what is going on. Throughout this video it portrays a clear idea that this girl is trying to have fun on a Friday night with her friends, which does relate to the lyrical content. 

"is this a hickey or a bruise" is sung as Katy Perry shows her neck to the audience which is the resemblance of either of these. This also relates to previous events sound by the artists such as "there's a stranger in my bed" which is shown as the girl is in her bedroom with random looking people and she looks confused, therefore relating with the lyrical content. 

Another music video that portrays a narrative aspect is Riptide by Vance Joy.

Focus is performed by Ariana Grande and this is an example of a performance music video. A performance based music video contains the artist singing and connecting with the viewers/audience which include dancing and lip syncing. These types of videos usually contain close up shots of the artist of which this video has close up shots of Ariana's lips singing and an extreme close up of her eyes and face. 

This video has a sexual theme therefore enhancing Ariana's features when they carry out a close up shot such as the licking of the lips and the wink, which makes the audience interact with the artist. In addition to this the lyric that is repeated as well as the title is "focus on me" of which she does make herself the centre of attention and is performing to the audience to ensure that everyone is focused on her. 

Another type of music video is concept which is portrayed above in the 'Adventure of a lifetime" video by Coldplay. A concept music video is more difficult to make due to the idea trying to be put across, although these are usually obscure and aren't particularly understood by the audience. Throughout this video is a monkey illustrating movements which does not involve the artist. The video doesn't instantly relate to the lyrics as it doesn't mention animals, therefore showing a concept type of music video. As well as this it shows an ape finding a beats pill which doesn't relate to the lyrical content at all.
